The Constitution of the Miramonte Junior Classical League (A.K.A. Miramonte Latin Club)
Preamble: We, the members of the Miramonte Junior Classical League (MJCL), in order to promote the study of the ancient Mediterranean world and strengthen the community of Miramonte High School, do hereby establish the constitution of the MJCL.
Article I: Name The name of this organization shall be the Miramonte Junior Classical League (MJCL) and informally known as Miramonte Latin Club.
Article II: Purpose The purpose of this organization shall be to promote a more thorough knowledge of ancient Mediterranean life, history, and literature; to impart a better understanding of the practical and cultural value of the ancient Mediterranean life, to interest other students in the Latin, Greek and other ancient Mediterranean languages, literature, government, laws, and arts; and, as members of this organization, to always strive to promote friendship and fellowship among students of the ancient world. MJCL is a chapter of the California Junior Classical League and the National Junior Classical League.
Article III: Parliamentary Procedure Robert’s Rules of Order, Revised shall be the accepted parliamentary authority for this organization, except in such cases where there is conflict with this Constitution or other guidelines of the Miramonte Junior Classical League. In such cases, precedence will be established by this Constitution, in accordance with its interpretations by the Executive Board.
Article IV: Membership All Miramonte Students may join the MJCL as specified herein:
A. Enrolled in a Miramonte Latin Class and/or completed all available Latin courses offered at the time or with the approval of Advisor.
B. Proper payment shall consist of the annual dues at the date determined by the Executive Board or an Advisor.
C. All members of MJCL are automatically enrolled in California Junior Classical League and National Junior Classical League.
Article V: Officers Section 1: Offices
A. Elected officers: The officers of this organization shall consist of Caesar(s) (President), Secundus Caesar (Vice President), Tertius Caesar (Vice Vice President), Consul Editor, Ille Honda (the Honda), Secretary, Spirit Leader, Dux Certaminis (Certamen Coordinator), Historian, Master of Communications, Dux Optimissimorum (Academic leader), Webmaster, and Creative Directors
B. Appointed positions: Any ad hoc positions determined by the MJCL Advisors
C. All MJCL members serving on state CAJCL Board or national NJCL board are automatically on the MJCL Executive Board for that term.
Section 2: Qualifications
Each officer shall be an individual member of this organization who:
A. is member in good standing in MJCL, California Junior Classical
League and the National Junior Classical League
B. is currently enrolled and will be enrolled during their term in a Latin Class at Miramonte or with the approval of the Advisor
C. has attended a state convention and is expected to be present at the annual state
convention
D. meets the following Latin level qualifications for each position in the school year
of the election:
a. The student(s) running for Caesar must be in Latin III or higher
b. The student running for Secundus Caesar must be in Latin II or higher
c. The student running for Dux Certaminis must be in Latin II or higher and must be an active member of the Miramonte Certamen and have experience competing in Certamen
d. All other officers are open to all levels
E. The positions of Caesar and Secundus Caesar must agree to enroll as TA for the
MJCL advisor for his/her year of office
F. The positions of Caesar, Historian, Consul Editor, Spirit Leader, and Creative Director may be held by more than one person with the approval of the Executive Board and MJCL Advisor
Section 3: Nomination and Election of officers
A. Nomination: All candidates must submit an application which will be approved by the MJCL Executive Board. The application must be submitted to the MJCL Advisor at a time set by the MJCL Executive Board.
B. Election procedure: the current Caesar will submit a ballot of possible officers to the Executive Board at time set by the MJCL Executive Board.
C. Speeches shall be given at lunch of the following Monday with voting taking
place at times specified by the MJCL Executive Board. Election results will be announced at the end-of-year Latin Club banquet.
D. Once elected, the officer term of office begins.
Section 4: Appointed Officers
A. Caesar(s), Secundus Caesar, Tertius Caesar together with MJCL advisor will determine the appointed positions for the following year.
B. The appointmented positions will be announced together with the elected Positions.
C. The duties of any ad hoc positions should be defined at this time
Section 5: Removal from Office
If an Executive Board member misses three planning meetings of the MJCL or MJCL advisor does not judge that they fulfilled the duties and responsibilities of their office, or an MJCL advisor deems that a student’s actions do not conform to the decorum of an MJCL officer, that officer will be removed from their position and a member in good standing will be appointed by the MJCL advisor to fill the vacant position.
Section 6: Duties of Officers common to all officers
● Attend all Wednesday officers’ meetings and lunch events
● Plan and run at least one lunchtime Latin Club event
● Attend the annual State Convention
● Be kind, spirited, and helpful!
Section 7: Duties of Specific Offices
A. Caesar(President):
a. Writes and posts meeting agendas in the club drive and leads the weekly lunch meetings of the MJCL
b. Organizes and communicates all activities and events with MJCL members through Discord and GroupMe
c. Presides over all MJCL officers and helps other officers fulfill their duties
d. Prepare MJCL’s entry for the NJCL Activities Contest by keeping an activity log
e. Maintain and update the club Google Drive
f. Presides over MJCL elections and creates Voter Info Guide containing info on all candidates
g. Keeps record of all financial records for the club, plans a budget, and keeps the members aware of the current balance
B. Secundus Caesar (Vice President):
a. Acts as Caesar in Caesar’s absence at the weekly lunch meetings
b. In charge of MJCL publicity and makes sure that MJCL participates in CAJCL and NJCL publicity contests
c. In charge of recruiting students to MJCL and retaining membership (i.e. encouraging attendance of MJCL events and meetings)
d. Assists Caesar and Secretary in maintaining the club’s Google Drive folder
e. Helps other officers fulfill their duties to the MJCL
C. Tertius Caesar (Vice Vice President):
a. Organizes weekly snacks for Latin Club meetings
b. In charge of organizing a quarterly community service project c. submits project to NJCL Community Service Contest and Club of the Month
D. Ille Honda (that Honda):
a. In charge of the chariot and the catapult for the CAJCL State Convention b. Able to take on additional duties as capable and needed, determined on an individual basis
E. Secretary:
a. Takes minutes at weekly meetings and helps plan the agenda with the Caesar
b. Keeps an accurate list of the attendance for each MJCL meeting and activity
c. Sends the minutes to all officers after every meeting and uploads them to the Google Drive
d. Creates officer roster with contact information at the beginning of the year
e. Submits minutes to Leadership every month
F. Spirit Leader:
a. Organizes and leads the MJCL in spirit at the annual CAJCL Convention b. Teaches spirit cheers to all MJCL members c. Responsible for ordering any necessary materials/costumes for Spirit in advance
G. Dux Certaminis (Certamen Coordinator):
a. Coordinates MJCL’s Certamen teams
b. Organizes and runs weekly Certamen meetings
i. Reads questions and conduct certamen practice in a polite and
constructive manner if the MJCL advisor cannot attend
c. Helps MJCL plan for certamen at Ludi, Carcer, and for the annual CAJCL
and NJCL Conventions
H. Dux Optimissimi (Academics Officer):
a. Organizes prep sessions for the Academic Cohort for convention b. Organizes outside tests (NLVE, NCEE, etc.)
I. Historian:
a. Coordinates the preparation of a scrapbook for the annual CAJCL Convention and Latin Banquet and keeps a historical documentation of all MJCL activities and officers.
b. Takes pictures or delegates others to take pictures of ALL MJCL events and uploads pictures to the Latin club google drive folder
c. Prepares entries for NJCL Club of the Month Contest
d. Maintains and displays awards and trophies from MJCL events
J. Consul Editor:
a. Organizes and distributes the MJCL Newsletter throughout the year
i. The newsletter must follow as closely as possible the guidelines
put out by NJCL so that it can successfully compete with the NJCL local publication contest
ii. Makes sure the newsletter appropriately promotes MJCL events
and contains professional but still interesting writing.
K. Master of Communications:
a. Maintains MJCL presence on social media specified by NJCL social
media contest and follows the guidelines as closely as possible to compete successfully in this NJCL contest
b. Edits and updates the MJCL Twitter feed, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.
c. Helps historian(s) record all MJCL events
L. Webmaster:
a. Maintains the MJCL website b. Follows guidelines of NJCL website contest as closely as possible and submits website to NJCL Website Contest.
Creative Director:
Section 8: State or National Board
A. If a student wishes to run for state or national board, they must obtain approval
from the MJCL Advisor and Executive board.
Article VII: JCL
A. All MJCL members will be automatically enrolled in the California Junior Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. The MJCL encourages all members to attend JCL events throughout the year and will provide scholarships for students to attend the National Junior Classical League Convention and the California Junior Classical League.
Article VI: Amendments
A. If appointed for an officer term, a Parliamentarian may make minor adjustments
to the constitution with the approval of the MJCL advisor. B. A new section or article may be added with a 2/3 majority vote by the current
officers at a planning meeting.
Article VII: Budget The budget is managed by the Caesar(s) unless otherwise decided and is discussed at meetings if necessary.
Article VIII: Meetings
A. MJCL Meetings are held every Wednesday at Lunch in Room 184/Zoom
a. every other meeting, unless otherwise specified by the MJCL advisor, will be a club planning meeting (a.k.a. officer meeting) b. All officers are required to attend every Wednesday meeting unless excused one day prior
i. Officers must notify either the MJCL advisor or the current Caesar(s) in the case of an absence
c. All other members of the Latin club are encouraged to attend all
Wednesday meetings
Article IX: Files
A. The MJCL Team Google Drive will be maintained by all officers and the MJCL advisor
B. All official club documents and photos will be stores in the team drive
Article X: Activities
Latin club promotes the mission of the JCL and the love of the study of the ancient world through publicity, fundraising, and other community activities. We have held bake sales, handed out bookmarks, and sung Christmas carols in the past as club activities, and plan on doing related activities this year.
